Microsoft announces Azure DevOps, will succeed Visual Studio Team Services

When it comes to customer expectations, the pandemic has changed everything

Learn how to accelerate customer service, optimize costs, and improve self-service in a digital-first world.

Microsoft today announced Azure DevOps, the successor of Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS, formerly Visual Studio Online) and Azure DevOps Server, the successor of Team Foundation Server (TFS). The included services ?span the breadth of the development lifecycle to help developers ship software faster and with higher quality,? the company promises.

The rebranding is not exactly a surprise, given that VSTS is essentially a cloud service backed by Microsoft Azure. Each Azure DevOps service is open and extensible, designed to work with any type of application, regardless of the framework, platform, or cloud. Azure DevOps supports both public and private cloud configurations.

As for pricing, Azure DevOps is free for open source projects and small projects (up to five users). For larger teams, the cost ranges from $30 per month (10 users) to $6,150 per month (1,000 users).

Above: A developer using all Azure DevOps services together from the vantage point of Azure Boards.

Azure DevOps includes:

Azure Pipelines: CI/CD that works with any language, platform, and cloud. Connect to GitHub or any Git repository and deploy continuously. Azure Pipelines is also now available in the GitHub Marketplace.

Azure Boards: Powerful work tracking with Kanban boards, backlogs, team dashboards, and custom reporting.

Azure Artifacts: Maven, npm, and NuGet package feeds from public and private sources.

Azure Repos: Unlimited cloud-hosted private Git repos for your project. Collaborative pull requests, advanced file management, and more.

Azure Test Plans: All in one planned and exploratory testing solution.

It?s worth noting that Azure Pipelines offers free CI/CD with unlimited minutes and 10 parallel jobs for every open source project. Many of the top open source projects are already using Azure Pipelines for CI/CD, including Atom, Cpython, Pipenv, Tox, Visual Studio Code, and TypeScript.

Above: Azure Pipelines used independently to build a GitHub repo.

Microsoft says its ?millions? of VSTS users will be upgraded into Azure DevOps projects automatically, and promises they will not lose any functionally. Instead, VSTS will gain more choice and control since Azure DevOps services ?work great together.? That said, URLs will be changed from abc.visualstudio.com to dev.azure.com/abc, and redirects from visualstudio.com URLs will be supported to avoid broken links.

VSTS users will also receive an updated user experience, which Microsoft will continue to iterate on based on feedback from the preview. New users will get the update today, and it will be enabled by default for existing users ?in the coming months.?

Users of TFS, the on-premises counterpart of VSTS, will continue to receive updates based on features live in Azure DevOps. Starting with the next version of TFS, the product will be called Azure DevOps Server and will receive the normal cadence of updates (new features have typically been added to VSTS first and then migrated to the on-premises TFS version as updates at approximately three-month intervals).

Azure devops msbuild Important news today Azure devops msbuild

Incremental Build Number for .NET Core via Azure DevOps

People familiar with the. NET framework knows that we can let the compiler self-increase the version number by specifying AssemblyVersion as 10.0.*. But. NET core and. NET Standard are not. Even with open source projects like MSBump, there are certain flaws. Typically, such a requirement happens on a CI/CD server. Let's take a look at how to easily handle it with Azure DevOps.

About Versioning in .NET Core Applications

I have wrote a post on the. NET Core Application Version number: https://edi.wang/post/2018/9/27/get-app-version-net-core

We're going to control Version field this time.

Use dotnet build to compile your application into dll files, and this version will be shown in the property window.

But actually, the build command can have a parameter that sets a specific version number, like this:

Based on this, we can control the build number for a .NET Core application on build servers.

Why Not Use MSBump

You may heard of a project: Msbump, which can also be used to change the version number at compile time. However, it modifies the csproj file at compile time and is a code change. The traditional. NET FX compilation system does not change the code. This is unacceptable to me because it is a kind of uncontrollable factor. It's not a good practice to check in the csproj file that just changed the version number. And instead of generating the version number based on the timestamp, MSBump by default, generates the version by the current version string in the project file. So in a development team, everyone could have inconsistent version of the same csproj file. So I decided to give up MSBump and try to use Microsoft's own technology to solve it's own problem.

Automatically Generate Version Numbers

In a fully automated CI environment, it is not possible for us to manually specify a version number each time. I need a rule and a method to generate it automatically.

The rules I personally use is: [Major].[Minor].[Number of days from January 1, 2000].[Lucky Number]

I use PowerShell to calculate the number of days from 1/1/2000.

Configure Azure DevOps

We basically need to tell Azure DevOps to calculate the version number, and use /p:Version parameter to build our project.

Environment variables

Add a variable named buildNumber in the build definition.

PowerShell Task

Add a PowerShell Task and put it as the first step in the build pipeline. This PowerShell Task need to calculate the version number and assign it to buildNumber variable

To set value to a variable in Azure DevOps pipeline, use Write-Host as:

##vso[task.setvariable variable= variableName ] variableValue

Then, our script will be

Choose Inline and copy this script to the textarea.

Modify .NET Core Task Parameter

Append this to the Arguments filed of both Build and Publish steps.

Notice: there should be a space [ ] before /p

Compile and Done

Trigger a new build, you can see the version number is being set in the build log

and the application will have an updated version after deployment
